He is also well-known for his friendship with and portrait of Andy Warhol. This impacted his art as he would go on to do portraits of political and military figures. However, he departed from the family tradition in his participation in the National Guard from 1966 to 1971. His painting is known for its realism, like his father, with many of his paintings featuring landscapes around Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania and Cushing, Maine where he was raised. Privately tutored at home and in the studio of his Aunt Carolyn Wyeth, he started a career in the arts at an early age and had his first show before his 21st year.
